Information for exchange students
All students who study at Rovaniemi can apply apartments from all DAS housing areas throughout the year. In August and September new students have priority to receive an apartment offer. Please notice that DAS is not able to accommodate all new students in the beginning of the semester.
Exchange students have also a special opportunity to apply accommodation from reserved quota at Kuntotie 3 and Kuntotie 5. These apartments are furnished and deadline for applying is always around the end of June (for autumn semester) or around the end of November (for spring semester). Date is informed in the information letter sent by the University to accepted exchange student.
If you have special preferences for your accommodation please send brief email to firstname.lastname@example.org. You can mention for example about allergies, smoking, your religion, if you use or not use alcohol, name of the friend you want to share the room with etc. Couples should apply together if they want to live together. DAS tries to arrange people with the same interests in the same room/apartment but we can’t promise that we can fulfill all your wishes.
We ask for your preferences in the application but due to the large amount of applicants and limited amount of rooms/apartments it is not always possible to get the option you wished for. For example you may then be offered a shared room instead of a single room. If you receive a housing offer like this, it means that your first choice was no longer available and this is the best available room/apartment for you.
DAS will send you an offer by email after we have checked that you are accepted to study in University of Lapland or Lapland UAS. Our offers will be sent by email earliest in June. Please read your email actively so that the offer won’t expire. Check carefully that your email address is correct in your application.
If you decide to decline the offer, DAS is not obliged to send you another housing offer.
In the apartments that DAS reserves for exchange students there is basic furniture: a bed, a mattress with a mattress pad, a desk, a chair, a ceiling lamp and a wardrobe. In the kitchen there is a kitchen table, chairs, an oven/stove, a fridge/freezer and kitchen cabinets. The model of furnitures might vary between rooms. In shared rooms are 2 beds but due to lack of space in the room only 1 writing desk and 1 wardrobe.
There is no cleaning service,
cleaning equipment, cutlery, dishes and cooking utensils in the
kitchens. You also need to bring your own pillows, blankets, sheets, towels and curtains. You need to use bed clothes (pillow case, sheet and duvet) in your bed.
DAS has three different types of accommodation options for the exchange students:
- a room in a shared apartment
- a shared room in a shared apartment
- a studio apartment
- a one room family apartment
- a two room family apartment
Most of the apartments reserved for exchange students are rooms in shared apartments or shared rooms in shared apartments.
Room in a shared apartment
Room in a shared apartment is one bedroom for a single person in an apartment shared by other exchange students. You will have your own private bedroom. You will share a kitchen, bathroom and possibly other common areas with other exchange student in the same apartment. There are separate shared apartments for male and female students.
Shared apartments have a kitchen with stove/oven and refrigerator, usually one bathroom and toilet. In addition some apartments may have a balcony.
Shared room in a shared apartment
Shared room in a shared apartment is one bedroom for two people in an apartment shared with other exchange students. You will have the same facilities than in a room for single person, but there are two beds in one room. Shared apartments have a kitchen with stove/oven and refrigerator, usually one bathroom and toilet. In addition some apartments may have a balcony.
There are separate shared apartments for male and female students.
This is a good option if you want to share the room with your friend. In the application, please remember to mention the name of the person you want to share the room with. He/she also has to send an application to DAS.
Studio apartment is a one-room apartment with a private bathroom, toilet and a small kitchen with stove/oven and refrigerator. Sizes of studio apartments vary between 20- 30 square metres.
One room family apartment
Sharing a studio apartment means that two exchange students share the studio apartment together. You will have the same facilities than in a studio apartment for single person, but there are two beds and the size is bigger than studio (about 35 m2).
This is a good option if you are a couple and want to have an apartment together. In the application, please remember to apply together with only one application. These apartments can be offered also to friends who want to share the same bedroom.
Two room family apartment
Two room family apartments are similar with shared apartments with two rooms. The agreement is made for the whole apartment for the couple together.
Check from the offer what kind of room you have been offered.
