Domus Arctica -säätiö had constructed a 8-story high student apartment building, which has CLT, Cross Laminated Timber framework. The building is located in Rantavitikka campus area, near university and it was named DAS Kelo. The goal was to built an apartment building, that has small carbon footprint and is communal. Bases of the designing and building were circular economy strategy of city of Rovaniemi, sustainable development, innovations created by digitalization and alternative energy production. Construction work begun in summer 2018 and the apartment building was ready in summer 2019.
There are 103 studios in DAS Kelo. Communality, and circular and sharing economy are made possible with common spaces, vehicles for common use, and reservation systems that serve these means. On the ground floor there are laundry room with washing and drying machines (5 of each) and clubroom for gathering and socializing. On the ground floor there are also space for fixing bikes and storages. DAS office is also located on the ground floor of the building. On the top floor there is sauna with clubroom that has a balcony with charming views.
The wooden apartment building is named "Kelo", which represents it's nature. The exterior surface has the shade of pine wood that has gone grey. Inside the building warm wood surface can be seen on the ceiling and on the flooring of the halls. The architecture represents minimalistic but vague view, which can be seen in shapes of the roofing and niche of the entrance. Every apartment has a french balcony and the colored windows bring some color especially in the times of lower light.
